Suspect Apprehended After 2 Killed In Hemet Hit-And-Run

HEMET (CBS) —  Two men were killed in a hit-and-run collision early Wednesday and the suspect was arrested about nine hours later in a stolen pickup truck, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Shane Albatross Stanscheit, 25, of Hemet, was taken into custody about 10 a.m. in connection with crash at Cornell Street and Stetson Avenue.

The accident was reported at 12:47 a.m., CHP Officer Daryl Crandall said.

Stanscheit was allegedly behind the wheel of a Chevrolet pickup that broadsided a Chevrolet Silverado, killing Luciano Cervantes, 44, of Hemet, Crandall said.

Stancheit's passenger, identified as 26-year-old Christopher Caldwell, was thrown from the truck and fatally injured, the officer said.

Details of how authorities tracked down Stanscheit were not immediately available.

Crandall said Stanscheit would be booked on suspicion of multiple counts of felony hit-and-run, auto theft and gross vehicular homicide.

The truck Stanschiet was driving was stolen not far from where the collision occurred, Crandall said.
