Suspect Accused Of Shooting 2 USC Students At Party Pleads Not Guilty

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — The 21-year-old man accused in the off-campus shooting of two USC students at a party September 4, pleaded not guilty in court Friday.

Tyson Tyree Smith is charged with two counts each of attempted murder and assault with a semiautomatic firearm.

Police said the two victims confronted Smith at the party -- being held in the 1200 block of West 37th Place -- around 2 a.m. when they believed he was trying to steal some Dr. Dre headphones.

He shot a female in the hand and a male in the stomach.

The names of the victims have not been releaded.

Paramedics credit the female victim with keeping the man breathing until they arrived. He was released from the hospital yesterday.

Smith, a resident of Signal Hill, was arrested Wednesday.

He remains jailed on a $3 million bail while awaiting a September 30 hearing to determine if there is enough evidence against him to go to trial.
