Super What? Puppy Bowl's Back
LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Get ready for fido fumbles, terrier touchdowns and a Kitten Halftime show, PUPPY BOWL VII is back!
Animal Planet has been hosting this annual canine battle that is broadcast at the same time as the Super Bowl, every year since since 2004. The all-star line-up of mutts was discovered at rescues and shelters with the help of Petfinder, an online, searchable database of adoption organizations, shelters and animals who need homes . This year's ten rookies include Cavlin, a 15 week old Border Terrier Mix and Booda, a 15 week Pug Mix, vying for the title of MVP (Most Valuable Puppy).
Fan favorites like the chicken cheerleaders or "chicks" and water bowl cameras are back and for the first time, the Puppy Cam - a video camera attached to one of players - offers a puppy's-eye-view. A blimp piloted by a team of hamsters covers end zone action throughout the entire stadium as puppies compete for first downs.
Referee Andrew Schechter has been catching puppy penalties like illegal napping, illegal use of the paws and the all-too-often excessive cuteness on the field for the past 4 years.
Says Schechter, "My most memorable moment or play from this year is when a Great Pyrenees puppy uses the water bowl as his personal swimming pool. He dives in nose first, splashes around and does his best doggy paddle before I call an "Illegal Splashing on the Field" penalty."
Hosted at Animal Planet Stadium, the game will be broadcast between 3 and 6 pm E/P this Sunday February 6th, 2011 at the same time as the Super Bowl™. Check out season VI Puppy Bowl highlights at Animal Planet.
