Students Return To Irvine High Schools Following Crash That Killed 5 Classmates
IRVINE (CBSLA.com) — Grief counselors Wednesday will be on the campuses of several Orange County high schools as students return to class following the fatal Newport Beach crash that killed five classmates.
Abdurlrahman M. Alyahyan, 17, a senior at University High School; Nozad Al Hamawendi, 16, a junior at Irvine High School; Cecilia Zamora, 17, a junior at Irvine High; and sisters Robin Cabrera, 17, and Aurora Cabrera, 16, both of Irvine High, were all killed Monday evening while on their way to the beach, the Orange County Sheriff's Department said.
Newport Beach police believe Alyahyan was driving at a high rate of speed when his car hit a tree and caught fire at Jamboree Road and Island Lagoon Drive.
Four teens were pronounced dead at the scene, and the fifth was declared dead at Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo.
Police have not confirmed if Alyahyan was driving with a provisional license, which restricts young drivers from transporting other passengers unless a licensed driver of the age of 25 is in the vehicle.
"It's hard to take it in because its at your school," one student told KNX 1070's Jon Baird.

Classes were not held in the Irvine Unified School District Tuesday due to staff development activities.
Students and staff returned to campuses Wednesday morning, where memorials have been set up.
"We normally have four counselors and one psychologist. Today we have 25 and more will be called as needed," Ian Hanigan of the Irvine Unified School District said.
