Stocks Edge Higher On Deals, Commodities Prices
NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are edging higher in midday trading at the start of the last full week before the next round of corporate earnings reports begin.
Materials companies are up nearly 1 percent, the most of any of the 10 company groups that make up the S&P 500 index, as commodity prices increase.
Southwest Airlines fell more than 2 percent as the company inspected its planes after the fuselage of one jet ripped during a flight Friday. Pfizer gained nearly 1 percent after announcing the sale of a business unit to a private equity firm.
The Dow Jones industrial average is up 16 points, or 0.1 percent, to 12,393. The S&P 500 is up 1, or 0.1 percent, to 1,334. The Nasdaq composite is up 2, or 0.1 percent, to 2,791.
