State May Probe Petition Drive At Compton School
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The California Board of Education wants a state investigation into alleged misconduct during a petition drive for a Compton charter school.
Roughly 62 percent of the parents at McKinley Elementary School signed petitions to turn the struggling Compton Unified School District campus into an independently run charter operation.
The petitions were turned in last week in California's first test of a new "parent trigger" law that empowers parents to make sweeping changes at low-performing schools.
There have been allegations of signature-gathering deceit and intimidation since they were turned in.
State education board president Ted Mitchell told the Los Angeles Times on Wednesday that he will ask the California attorney general to investigate the complaints.
McKinley ranks in the bottom 10 percent of California's elementary schools.
