Stadium In OC To Be Dedicated To Man Who Died While Protecting Fellow Navy Seals Overseas
GARDEN GROVE (CBSLA.com) — An athletic facility is expected to be dedicated to a Navy Seal who died while protecting his comrades overseas.
The Michael Monsoor Memorial Stadium, a massive new athletic facility, will soon be dedicated to the posthumous medal of honor recipient who threw himself on a grenade in Iraq to protect his fellow Navy Seals.
"We love Mike," said Sara Monsoor, his sister, who will never forget the day she learned her brother had been killed. "He was an amazing person."
Now, new generations in Garden Grove will always remember him.
"We never would have thought that anything would happened this way," she said.
In a moving ceremony Tuesday night at his alma mater, Garden Grove High School, where Mike graduated in 1999, his family was honored to hear that the stadium will be dedicated to him.
"We are very humbled that people feel so moved by what Mike has done and we appreciate everything that everyone does to remember him and to recognize him," his sister said.
Years before Monsoor sacrificed his life for his fellow seals in Iraq, at Garden Grove High, he always put his teammates first, his former coach said.
"He gave it all when he was here at school in the football program and certainly he gave all he had for his country so I can't think of anything better," said Kris Van Hook.
Construction starts next year on the stadium, which will be built on the school's campus. It will be open in 2018.
