Spiritual Author Prepares For Congressional Campaign Against 19-Term Incumbent Waxman
REDONDO BEACH (CBSLA.com) — A best-selling author hopes to write a new chapter in California politics by unseating a powerful incumbent.
Marianne Williamson is challenging 19-term Democratic Rep. Henry Waxman, who has held public office since 1975.
Williamson appeared at the first public event of her campaign for Congress in California's 33rd District Thursday at the Mysterious Galaxy Independent Bookstore in Redondo Beach, where she spoke with CBS2 political reporter Dave Bryan.
"A 40-year term - I don't think anyone, quote unquote, deserves that. And I think that in any system there is value to institutional memory. There's also value to fresh ideas," she said.
Williamson is best-known as a spiritualist. Six of her 10 books have landed on the New York Times best seller list.
She is also the founder of Project Angel Food, which provides food to home-bound people with AIDS in the L.A. area, and is the founder of the Peace Alliance, which supports the creation of a U.S. Department of Peace.
She acknowledges she would be a different kind of congressmember.
"I think there's a new conversation in this country, and it's a much more holistic perspective. It doesn't see us just as economic creatures. It doesn't see us just as physical creatures. It gives far more credence to psychology and emotion," Williamson said.
Her supporters, including Trish Farley, who says she's a certified professional astrologer, are already rallying to support.
"She's got some very beautiful ideas about how to change this country," Farley said.
A spokesperson for Rep. Waxman issued the following statement to CBS2/KCAL9: "I'm gratified Ms. Williamson thinks I'm doing a good job and agrees with me on most issues. And while some think it would make more sense for her to challenge a Republican and help us regain control of the House, I respect her right to run."
Independent candidate Brent Roske announced in August he is also running for the seat.
