Southland Residents Waiting To Hear From Loved Ones In Acapulco
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Southland residents are waiting to hear from loved ones missing in the wake of Tropical Storm Manuel as rain continues to flood Acapulco.
Eighty people have been killed by the storm, dozens more are missing, and more rain and flooding are expected.
Mexican Consulate Office Deputy Consul General Juan Carlos Mendoza told KCAL9's Amy Johnson his office is working diligently to help those affected.
"For any Mexican it's very difficult to see that kind of devastation, especially in some places like Guerrero," Mendoza said.
Tropical Storm Manual continues to wreak havoc on the Mexican state since being downgraded from a hurricane, damaging 35,000 homes and shutting down communication in the region.
The consul general said the community is working together to help those affected overcome the tragedy.
"It's not the first time that we have to face this natural disaster," he resolved. "We have a lot of solidarity among Mexicans and are ready to rebuild."
Isai Pazos, General Secretary of the Regional Organization of Oaxaca, is meanwhile waiting to hear from those who are missing.
"We have family and friends that are at this time affected with this situation and unfortunately right now we haven't had communication with them. Within the days we are hoping to at least get more information of the damages and the people that we probably lost (sic)," he said, adding, "We are trying to gather everyone, every citizen that we can to basically support and help the victims that we have in Oaxaca as well as in Guerrero."
The Regional Organization of Oaxaca has a fundraiser planned for the victims in Mexico this weekend.
