Southern California Beaches Tested For Tar Balls After Spill
SANTA BARBARA (AP) — Officials coordinating the cleanup of an oil spill on the Santa Barbara coast in May say they are still checking to see if tar balls are washing up on Southern California beaches.
Cleanup commanders said Saturday that they sampled beaches nearby and as far away as Newport Beach in Orange County to see if oil from the spill was continuing to wash up.

The Plains All American Pipeline ruptured May 19 and spilled up to 101,000 gallons of crude oil.
About of a fifth of the oil flowed into the ocean, killing wildlife and closing state beaches.
Tar balls were found in neighboring Ventura County and more than 100 miles away on Redondo Beach in Los Angeles County.
More samples were taken Thursday and Friday in four Southern California counties.
