Suspected Hit-And-Run Driver Arrested In Street-Racing Crash That Left Girl With Severe Brain Injury
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — A suspected hit-and-run driver is locked up in connection to a street-racing crash that injured a mother and two young girls, police say.
According to a LAPD spokesperson, the victim was turning south onto Hoover St. from westbound Florence Ave. when she was struck by a black Chevy Camaro that was racing a black Ford Mustang shortly before 9 p.m. December 9.
Security video captured the crash, which sent the Lety Garcia's vehicle into a light pole.
Garcia, 24, says her nine-year-old daughter, Delila, and Delila's nine-year-old best friend suffered severe injuries.
"We've had them come in – the doctor come in – and tell us to prepare for the worst already," Garcia said of her daughter, who suffered a severe brain injury. "It's just something you don't want to hear."
The driver who hit them, identified as 38-year-old Franklin Winbom, was also taken to the hospital, where he was arrested.
His bail is set at $20,000.
Police are still searching for the driver of the Ford Mustang, who they say fled the scene without providing aid or identifying themselves.
