South LA Residents Celebrate Arrival Of 'Fresh Fridays'

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A produce stand in the parking lot of a South Los Angeles market is a fresh addition to the King Estates neighborhood.

The stand in the lot of Century Liquor & Market on the corner of 39th Street and Western Avenue brings organic fruit, vegetables, and snacks during "Fresh Fridays."

Community Coalition and Community Services teamed up with the market to find this positive solution just three weeks after the closure of a Ralphs grocery store in the area. The closure marked the second in the area leaving the community with less access to healthful foods.

"The owner now he has really cleaned up this corner here. At one time, this corner wasn't one that you would want to come to because of all of the crime and gangs," 79-year-old Isaac White said.

Karren Lane, Prevention Network Director at the Community Coalition, told CBS2's Louisa Hodge that more than 200 people attended the grand opening last week.

"At one point, the CSU had to replenish because they had sold out of all the produce," she said.

"Fresh Fridays" will be open every Friday afternoon in the 3800 block of South Western Avenue.
