Firefighters Extinguish Greater Alarm Fire At Abandoned Church In South LA
SOUTH LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Firefighters Monday extinguished a greater alarm fire at a two-story church in South Los Angeles.
According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, the fire erupted shortly after 5:00 a.m. in the 8300 block of South Hoover Street.
"When we arrived on scene we had fire showing," said LAFD Spokesperson Erik Scott. "[This is] a very significant and challenging incident for us."
A portion of the roof collapsed while more than 125 firefighters were inside the building.
A mayday alert was initially issued, but all firefighters have since been accounted for, Scott added.
The blaze was knocked down within just under two hours.
CBS2's Jasmine Viel reported firefighters rescued a dog named Bear from the burning building.
Officials issued street closures near Vermont Avenue and 84th Street for part of the morning.
According to neighbors, the church is an abandoned building that houses the homeless. Authorities have not confirmed this.
No injuries or evacuations have been reported.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
