South L.A. Family Hopes Public Can Help Solve 3-Year-Old Cold Case Murder
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — The murder happened at Avalon and 103rd Street in South L.A. nearly three years ago.
Keion Netherly, a 28-year-old black man, was shot and killed about 1:10 a.m. July 15, 2012.
Netherly had just left his dad's house when he was shot in the stomach.
Police and the man's family have said Netherly wasn't in a gang.
Witnesses that morning said they heard four shots. Netherly was pronounced dead at a hospital.
Almost three years have passed, but for Netherly's family still searching for answers, the pain is very fresh.
Netherly's family spoke Wednesday to KCAL9's Andrea Fujii.
"We can't bring him back; we just want justice," says Talisha Jones, Netherly's older sister.
The three years have not eased her pain.
"We were really close; that was my heart," says Jones.
Detectives told Fujii they've run out of leads and need the public's help.
"It may be a possible [case of] mistaken identity we haven't ruled that out," LAPD detective Scott Teubert said.
Netherly was just about to start trade school; he wanted to study electronics. He was hoping to make a good life for his daughter, now 7.
"She loved her daddy very much," says Jones.
The family wants closure more than anything. They have so many unanswered questions. Like the police, they, too, are asking the public to step up and come forward.
"To me, he died alone, and no one is talking," Jones said.
Detectives told Fujii that solving the case has been especially difficult because there is no security video in the area.
