South Bay Church Starts Petition To Halt Opening Of 2nd Nearby Strip Club

SOUTH BAY (CBS) — How many strip clubs in one neighborhood is too many?

That's the question behind an effort led by a Harbor-Gateway church after a new "gentleman's club" gets ready to open next weekend.

Calvary Chapel South Bay church members are concerned over the debut of the Bay Girl's Gentleman's Club between Hamilton Avenue and Del Amo Boulevard near the 110 Freeway in Gardena.

The club — located less than one mile from the church — would be the second strip club to open near the church.

KNX 1070's Pete Demetriou reports Supervisor Mark Ridley Thomas may ask the LA County Department of Regional Planning to revisit the issue of concentration of adult entertainment venues in any one area.

Members say that both Bay Girl's and another strip club called "Spearmint Rhino" located about a half-mile to the west are aimed at exploiting young women and are not welcome in the neighborhood.

"It's multicultural, lot of children," said church member Joshua Moore. "We don't think it's beneficial."

"This is just nonsense, it's not needed, it's something we don't think any good's going to come out of it," said Calvary Chapel pastor Rob Stoffel.

The church's petition drive against the club has reportedly collected over 3,000 signatures.
