LONG BEACH (CBS) — The sole survivor of Wednesday's salon massacre in Seal Beach that killed eight people is fighting for her life at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center.
The Los Angeles Times reports 73-year-old Hattie Stretz is listed in critical condition, but is said to be improving.
CBS2 is investigating reports that Stretz's daughter was cutting her hair at the time of the shooting, and is among the victims.
Police say five women and one man were killed inside Salon Meritage Wednesday afternoon, and another man and woman were later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Two of the victims have been identified as salon owner Randy Fannin, and stylist Michelle Fournier.
Fournier's ex-husband, Scott Dekraai, is the accused shooter. Police are now searching his Huntington Beach home, which he shares with his current wife, Mindy, for clues and evidence.
Neighbors told KCAL9 that 42-year-old Dekraai is a good man, loving father and devoted husband. An "extremely shocked" Stephanie Malchow described him as "super friendly."
His ex-wife's co-workers, however, painted a different picture and told KCAL9's Stacey Butler that she was afraid of him, that he threatened her with guns in the past, and that she had a restraining order against him.
Fournier's Garden Grove neighbors describe her as a hard-working mother of a 7-year-old boy.
"Well, she seemed like a very lovely girl. Sweet. She cared about her little boy. She played with my granddaughter," neighbor Charlyn Page said.
Dekraai, who reportedly lost a leg in a tug boat accident in 2004, has no criminal history.
He and Fournier were reportedly in the middle of a bitter custody fight over their son.
Dekraai is scheduled to be arraigned on murder charges Friday.
