Social Media Played Role In Unfolding Shooting Rampage In Oregon
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — From students on campus tweeting about the tragedy as it unfolded, to politicians and citizens giving condolences to victims and their families, social media played a large role in the shooting rampage on a college campus in Oregon
Even though tweets are limited to 140 characters, KCAL9's Jeff Nguyen reported that even with short posts the sense of alarm and panic was evident during the Roseburg attack.
On Twitter, student Kayla Marie wrote, "OMG, there's someone shooting on campus."
She added, "Students are running everywhere. Holy God."
An hour later she updated concerned loved ones. "Hi, guys. I'm OK. Physically. We're being bused off campus."
Officials in Washington were also quick to make their anger and outrage known.
Former US Attorney General Eric Holder tweeted, "Enough! Now Oregon. What reason now to oppose safety measures? Other nations have not had these mass shootings after implementing reforms."
Presidential candidates like Bernie Sanders and Mike Huckabee also took to Twitter to express their condolences to the victims and their families.
