'SlutWalk' To Take Place Saturday In West Hollywood Park
LOS ANGELES (KNX1070) — Organizers of a "SlutWalk" (Saturday, noon-3 p.m., West Hollywood Park, 647 N. San Vicente Blvd.) insist they aren't trying to be provocative just for the sake of grabbing attention. They have an important message they want everyone, men and women, to hear.
KNX 1070's Jim Thornton and Diane Thompson interviewed Hugo Schwyzer, an organizer of SlutWalk Los Angeles.

"Earlier this year while giving a talk to a group of students at a Toronto-area university about rape, a Toronto constable who was apparently trained on how to educate young people about rape prevention told young women that the best thing they can do to prevent rape and to keep themselves safe was to 'avoid dressing like sluts.'"
That comment led to a firestorm and a political movement exploding on social media like Twitter and Facebook.
Marches, like the one planned in West Hollywood, are taking place on six continents. SlutWalks are also organized for Toronto, Boston, Amsterdam and Brazil.
They want to spread the word, globally, that how one dresses, male or female, does not invite a sexual attack or rape. Organizers are hoping that by using a term like "slut" they can take the word back from those who would use it to denigrate women.
Organizers also told KCAL9's Melissa McCarty that they don't care what people wear to the rally... parka, bikini, t-shirt, high heels. They want to drive home the point. What one wears does not invite rape or sexual assault.
