Skyrocketing Airfares Forcing Southern Californians Into Their Cars For Memorial Day Getaway
LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Hitting the road this holiday weekend?
Get ready for some company on your getaway. An estimated 2.6 million residents will be on the roads to destinations like San Diego and Las Vegas for the Memorial Day holiday, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California. That's an increase of nearly 2 percent from last year.
Higher gas prices aren't keeping Southern Californians out of their cars – despite the average price of $4.33 for a regular gallon of gas in the Los Angeles-Long Beach area, higher airfares are forcing people off planes and onto the roads.
Auto Club officials expect a 5 percent decrease in air travel.
Besides San Diego and Las Vegas, Southern Californians will be headed to the Grand Canyon, San Francisco and the Central Coast.
