Skateboarding Accident Claims Life Of 9-Year-Old Orange County Boy

DANA POINT (CBSLA.com) — A skateboarding accident has taken the life of an Orange County boy.

On Sunday evening, 9-year-old Nathan Smith was riding his skateboard with friends at Doheny State Beach in Dana Point. He was holding on to the side of a van, when Orange County Sheriff's investigators said he fell under the back left wheel and was killed.

"Everyone knew he surfed. Had always a smile on his face. That's what we want to remember him by. Not the tragedy that happened here, but what he was and the joy he gave us," said Nathan's sister Malia.

His sister, who wasn't there that night, said he went to let go and another car hit him. Witnesses told CBS2 News he hit another and fell back under the van.

The Sheriff's Department said they are investigating, but do not believe another driver was responsible. What's making it harder is that Nathan's 22-year-old sister was driving the van.

"It was blamed on my sister, and that is hurting all of us," said Smith.

She said that Nathan was an avid skateboarder and musician, adding that "he would run to the beach just to say hi, give a hug, say how are you doing."

Smith is grateful for the support, and focused on his short time here.

"He is our sun shining down on us. I want him to be recognized for that and not the tragedy," Smith said.

A Go Fund Me site has been created to help Nathan's family cover his funeral costs and expenses.
