Sister Of KCAL9 Political Analyst Who Survived Nepal Quake Raising Money For Recovery Efforts
STUDIO CITY (CBSLA.com) — A Southern California woman who was hiking The Himalayas when last week's 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck Nepal is raising money for relief efforts.
CBS2/KCAL9 political analyst Caroline Heldman says her sister, Kathleen Heldman, was feared dead for two days after the April 25 disaster, which has killed approximately 6,800, according to most recent estimates.
"She was climbing the Gangchempo mountain in The Himalayas when it hit," Caroline Heldman said, adding that her sister sustained minor injuries.
"They lived through two avalanches, rocks coming down, flying at them. She jumped in front of rocks and pushed a friend out of the way. There were a lot of injuries. They were trapped for then four days above the avalanche - they couldn't get down."
The U.N. estimates 130,000 homes were destroyed in the aftermath of the quake, centered north of Kathmandu.
