Single-Engine Plane Crashes In Compton Back Yard
COMPTON (CBSLA.com) — A single-engine Piper PA28 airplane took off Wednesday from Compton/Woodley Airport with one passenger, and after flying briefly, the plane experienced engine failure.
The pilot attempted to land the plane on Central Avenue but was unable to do so.
He was forced to make an emergency landing about 2:40 p.m. in the backyard of home on the 1800 block of Reeve Street in Compton, about two blocks south of Alondra Boulevard.
The pilot suffered a deep cut above his left eye from the impact of the crash; however, he was able to get out of the plane before paramedics arrived.
He was treated at the scene before being taken to a hospital.
The pilot did not hit any houses or power lines, and no fires were reported.
The home's back yard suffered minor damage.
The National Transportation Safety Board will conduct an investigation and oversee the removal of the plane from the resident's yard.
Tomorrow's Aeronautical Museum, a nonprofit organization that helps teach kids to fly, has confirmed that the Piper PA28 aircraft is indeed theirs.
An employee of the Museum confirmed that the pilot was an older student who may have just gotten his flying license.
This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.
