Singing Legend Eydie Gorme Dies At 84

LAS VEGAS (CBSLA.com) — Eydie Gorme -- legendary singer and half of the duo Steve and Eydie -- died Saturday in Las Vegas.

Gorme was 84.

Her spokesperson, Howard Bragman wrote in a statement "Legendary singer and performer Eydie Gorme passed away peacefully today at Sunrise Hospital following a brief illness. She was surrounded by her husband, son and other loved ones at the time of her death."

Gorme and husband Steve Lawrence were concert, Las Vegas and recording stars through the 60s and early 70s. They were fixtures on the talk show (both were signed as regulars on Steve Allen's "Tonight Show") and variety show circuit.

In a statement on People.com,  Steve Lawrence said: "Eydie has been my partner on stage and in life for more than 55 years. I fell in love with her the moment I saw her and even more the first time I heard her sing."

He added: "While my personal loss is unimaginable, the world has lost one of the greatest pop vocalists of all time."

The two met in 1953 and were married on December 29, 1957.

Gorme was born Edith Garmezano August 16, 1928 in the Bronx.

While the couple was forever linked as a duo (they had 12 Emmys, 2 Grammys and 93 albums), they each had singular success as well.

Most memorably, Gorme hit the Billboard charts in 1963 with what would become a signature song, "Blame it on the Bossa Nova."

The couple had two sons. Gorme is survived by Lawrence, one son and a granddaughter.
