1 Dead In Shooting On 91 Freeway In Anaheim
ANAHEIM (CBSLA.com) — A shooting left one person dead Monday on the 91 freeway near the 57 interchange.
The shooting was confirmed by California Highway Patrol officials.
At least one person was reported dead at the scene.
The identity of the deceased victim has not been released.
Another passenger from the victim's vehicle was reportedly transferred to a hospital to be treated for injuries. His condition was not immediately available.
A third person — and possibly a fourth — from the victim's vehicle was reportedly interviewed by detectives on scene and was transferred to the police station.
The victim, whose body remained on the scene as investigations progressed, was driving a white pickup, the side window of which was shattered when police arrived at the scene.
The shooting suspect may have been driving a black Honda sedan.
Police say they do not have a motive or a suspect description.
"We're not certain if it was car-to-car, there's some preliminary information we got, so we're trying to work through that," Anaheim Police Department Lt. Bob Dunn said.
Anaheim Fire Department officials say they responded to calls of shots fired on the 91 freeway, just east of the 57 freeway, at 8:04 p.m.
The CHP had shut down the 91 westbound lanes from the Tustin off-ramp, causing substantial backups on the 91, 57 and 55 freeways.
All traffic coming off of the 91 freeway westbound, as well as traffic coming off the 57 en route to the 91 westbound, was diverted to Tustin Avenue.
"We have reports that this may have begun at Tustin and 91, Kramer and 91, and then here at the 91 and 57, so that's why the closure is so large behind me," Dunn said. "The closure begins at Tustin and works its way westbound, we'll be searching through all that as a potential crime scene. So, the freeway will be closed until we can get through that."
The traffic shutdown was expected to last throughout the investigation.
The Anaheim Police Department and CHP performed a sweep over the stretch of freeway, looking for evidence, shortly after 10 p.m.
It took authorities about an hour and a half to sweep to the point of the victim's vehicle.
