Shots Fired In Sight Of LAPD Officer; Students Released After South LA School Lockdown
LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Students at a South Los Angeles elementary school were being released Tuesday afternoon after an LAPD officer reported seeing a gunman fire his weapon at a nearby location.
An officer radioed for help and reported shots fired just before 10 a.m. in the 800 block of West 53rd Street, and police flooded the area in search of a suspect who may have been carrying a Glock pistol.
LAPD Officer Sara Faden said no officers were injured, but it was unclear if the suspect — described only as a male — was injured. It was also unclear what led to the gunfire.
Students at 52nd Street Elementary near Hoover Street were held in their classrooms as police swarmed the area, according to Monica Carazo of the Los Angeles Unified School District.
Shortly after 1 p.m., officials began sending students home from a secure location at 51st Street and Hoover streets, said Susan Cox, also of the LAUSD.
Police closed some streets around the scene of the shooting while the search for the suspect continued, said Richard French of the LAPD.
