Carjacking Suspect Shot, Killed Following Chase From Perris To Mexican Border
PERRIS (CBSLA.com) — Customs Officers shot and killed a suspected carjacker Saturday after the man led CHP on a wild chase from Perris to the Mexican border, according to CBS2's sister station in San Diego, CBS8.
Authorities said the chase often exceeded 100-mph and started in Perris, went through San Diego, and culminated at the border.
The chase ended just before 10:35 a.m. when officers said shots were fired near the end of Route 905.
It was unclear if the suspect also fired at officers following the 75-mile chase.
The chase started around 9:39 a.m. with the suspect inside a silver Chevrolet Impala that was allegedly carjacked.
Officials said the man was also observed running red lights on surface streets in Perris.
Riverside County sheriff's deputies chased the Impala onto southbound Interstate 215 in Perris, and handed off the chase to the CHP as the car moved south on the 215 and then Interstate 15 through Murrieta and Temecula.
Just before 10 a.m., CHP officers from the Inland Empire handed off the chase to CHP working out of Oceanside.
The chase traversed San Diego on Interstate 15 and other freeways. The motorist then veered east on Route 905, the access road to the eastern border crossing at Otay Mesa, effectively a dead end.
Officials on Saturday evening said three agents fired on the suspect.
Police did not identify the dead man or say if he had a criminal record.
Authorities did say no law enforcement officers were hurt in the pursuit or shooting.
