Sheriff: Boater Found Dead Off Redondo Beach Committed Suicide
REDONDO BEACH (CBSLA.com) — A man whose body was recovered from the waters off Redondo Beach committed suicide, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said.
The body was reported floating in the water near a rental boat about five miles off the coast Sunday afternoon.
The boat had been rented around 11:15 a.m. in Marina del Rey and the unidentified man's body was discovered around 1:30 p.m.
Investigators determined the death was a suicide, but declined to release additional details.
Family members told authorities that the man had rented the boat for an afternoon of fishing. They said he had "mobility problems" and would have been unlikely to be able to swim if he fell overboard.
