Sheared Hydrant Gushes Water, Collapses Roof Of Ontario Gas Station

ONTARIO (CBSLA.com) — A sheared fire hydrant sent water gushing and collapsed the roof of an Ontario gas station, authorities said Monday.

The incident was reported around 7 a.m. at a Chevron station at the Holt Avenue and Mountain Street when a caller drove by and noticed the roof had collapsed, according to the Ontario Police Department.

As water streamed onto the canopy that sits over the gas pump area, it eventually caused too much weight and forced the shell to collapse, according to police.

Canopies are only put in place for sun shade and cannot bear large volumes of water or other heavy weights, according to the Ontario Fire Department.

Crews shut off the gas pumps and water supply, police said. No fuel was leaked.

A small sink hole also formed near the site of the gusher, according to police.

No injuries were reported.

The gas station was red-tagged - marking it as seriously damaged and unsafe to occupy - until further notice.
