5 Freeway Through Sun Valley Reopens After Severe Flooding, Mudslide

SUN VALLEY (CBSLA.com) — The California Highway Patrol has reopened north and southbound lanes on the 5 Freeway in Sun Valley after severe flooding forced their closures Wednesday.

Lanes were shut down in both directions near the Roscoe Boulevard ramps at approximately 3:00 p.m. after storm runoff overloaded a drain near the Sunland overpass, sending water, mud and debris cascading into interstate traffic.

"The drain just above the freeway was filled with debris... that overflowed and caused the mud to come into the freeway," Caltrans spokesperson Patrick Chandler told KCAL9's Suraya Fadel.

A woman who became trapped in her car on the northbound side of the freeway had to be rescued.

At least two other vehicles were also reported stuck in the debris after part of an embankment collapsed.

Caltrans crews responded to the scene and completed cleanup efforts Wednesday evening.

The flooding was first reported shortly after 1:30 p.m. near the Roscoe Boulevard ramps of Interstate 5.

Officials are investigating if a flood channel overflowing impacted the situation and are also trying to determine if there was a possible water main break.

No injuries or collisions were reported.
