Woman Killed, 7 Hurt In Shooting Spree At San Diego Pool Party
UNIVERSITY CITY (CBSLA.com) – A woman was killed and seven people were injured when a man opened fire during a pool party at an apartment complex in the San Diego neighborhood of University City Sunday night, police said.
Just after 6 p.m., a man opened fire in a crowded pool area of the La Jolla Crossroads apartments in the 9000 block of Judicial Dr., San Diego police Chief Shelley Zimmerman said in a news conference.
The suspect was identified as 49-year-old Peter Selis, believed to be a resident of the complex.
The six gunshot victims included four African-American females, two African-American males and a Hispanic male. One of the females died after being transported to a hospital, Zimmerman said. Another male broke his arm while running from the scene.
911 callers described the suspect as a "white male, wearing brown shorts armed with a gun, who had shot numerous people in the pool area," Zimmerman said.
A police chopper arrived on scene and observed that the suspect was still in the pool area and appeared to be reloading his handgun, Zimmerman said. When three officers arrived on scene, the suspect pointed his gun at them and there appeared to have been "an exchange of gunfire," Zimmerman said, although it was uncomfirmed if Selis actually fired his weapon. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators did not immediately have a motive for the shooting spree.
"We are interviewing witnesses and at this point we don't know what the motive is with this shooting," Zimmerman said.
One resident, who did not want to be identified, described what he saw to KFMB-TV.
"My fiancée and I heard people yelling from my apartment, and screaming. She's a nurse, we came downstairs to see what was going on. We saw three people laying on the ground, shot. As we asked if we could help, we heard more gunshots, and ran up into our club house. From our clubhouse, we could see the pool area where the suspect was sitting, drinking a beer with one hand, with his gun out in the other."
It was unclear if the suspect knew any of the victims prior to the shooting, Zimmerman said.
The victims' names and their conditions were not immediately confirmed.
