Several Homes Damaged After Carjacking Suspect Crashes Into Hydrant
EL SERENO (CBS) — Crews are working to clean up a watery mess after a carjacking suspect crashed into a high-pressure fire hydrant.
The crash in the 3300 block of North Edloft Avenue in El Sereno happened just after 6 p.m. Tuesday.
Dramatic video captured by Sky2 shows water spewing into the air, dousing homes near Edloft and Twining Street.
Firefighters were forced to evacuate 12 people from three nearby homes that were sprayed with water for two hours.
One of those homes was red-tagged and the family wasn't able to return.
The Los Angeles Fire Department says both the heavy flow of water and the water shut off valve's location deep underground made it difficult to stop the geyser.
Officials say the black Ford Escort sideswiped a truck before crashing into the hydrant.
