Seven Local Parks Get Greenlight For Outdoor Fitness Zones
LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Newly announced outdoor "fitness zones" planned for seven local parks may be a way for SoCal residents to cut back on pricey gym memberships.
"Fitness Zones supply gym equipment to unincorporated neighborhoods so local residents can exercise free of charge," said County Supervisor Gloria Molina. "They've been very successful in the 10 parks where L.A. County already has installed them."
Molina announced Tuesday that $425,000 has been allocated to build seven more of the outdoor exercise areas. Six will go into county parks in the First District, which Molina represents, and one in Morgan Park in the city of Baldwin Park.
The county parks getting the zones include Avocado Heights Park in unincorporated Avocado Heights, City Terrace and Saybrook parks in unincorporated East Los Angeles, Bassett and Martin parks in unincorporated West Valinda and Valleydale Park in unincorporated Azusa.
Construction is scheduled to begin in January and should be complete by the spring.
Proposition A funds will cover $175,000 and the Trust for Public Land, a national nonprofit land conservation organization, will supply the remaining $250,000 through private grants it has secured.
