Search Underway For Inmate Who Walked Away From Sylmar Fire Camp

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Authorities were searching Wednesday for a 24-year-old state prisoner who is believed to have walked away from an inmate fire camp in Sylmar.

Riverside County resident Jesse Diaz is believed to have walked away from Los Angeles County Fire Camp 16 at 12653 N. Little Tujunga Canyon Road sometime around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to reports.

KNX 1070's Jon Baird reports the inmate was sent to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) camp after being convicted of evading police.

Diaz was imprisoned March 21, 2014 from Riverside County to serve a four-year sentence for evading a peace officer while driving recklessly, according to the Associated Press. That was his second strike, and he was scheduled to parole next summer.

He is described as an Hispanic male, 5'10" tall and 130 pounds with either black hair or a shaved head. He has the number 56 tattooed on his neck.

The Fire Camp holds 71 inmates, 50 from LA County who are housed for just 10 dollars a day, according to Baird.
