An attempted murder suspect who fled from a San Bernardino County jail on Sunday was located and arrested just a day later by Los Angeles police.

Before escaping, Deshaun Stamps, 29, had been in custody since Jan. 30, 2023 for attempted murder and assaulting a police officer, according to San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department officials.

At around 12:20 p.m. on Sunday, deputies discovered that Stamps had escaped custody at the West Valley Detention Center during an "outside recreation period," according to a statement from the department.

Roger Montesinos, an inmate who was released from the same facility on Monday, recalled the moments after they found that Stamps had fled.

"I was in, two bunks down, when they put us in a code red," he said. "They told us we had to bunk up for our safety. ... They were looking for somebody who escaped, so we just bunked up for the rest of the night."

Deputies have not yet disclosed exactly how Stamps got out, but Montesinos says that word of the escape spread like wildfire inside of the detention center.

"I heard when they went out to yard he was able to hop the fence and go out the back way," he said. "You're out in the open, you're out in the yard, cement walls. But, the top is a fence, just a regular fence. So if you're able to push it up enough, I can see that happening — there's no barbed wire on the other side."

Stamps is described as standing 5-foot-11 and weighing around 170 pounds. He is bald with green eyes and has tattoos on his neck and head. It is unclear what clothing he could be wearing, deputies said.

"Do not attempt to make contact with Stamps," the statement said.

Circumstances leading up to his arrest have not been provided by deputies, but Los Angeles Police Department officers located him at around 12:20 p.m. on Monday in Hollywood and arrested him.

San Bernardino County deputies have since taken custody of Stamps, they said.

West Valley Detention Center is located miles from the nearest home, but it's close to the I-15 and I-10 Freeways in Rancho Cucamonga, which left some residents with concern.

"I don't understand how he was over there with that type of charge because I thought that was a detention center," said Dani Fuller, who lives nearby.

According to SBSD officials, Stamps is from Riverside and his most recent court appearance happened last week, when he was ordered to undergo mental evaluation for his competency to stand trial.

Anyone with information on his whereabouts is urged to contact deputies by calling 911.
