3 People Detained In Connection With Shooting That Injured 2 LAPD Officers
FLORENCE (CBSLA.com) — An investigation continued Monday in South Los Angeles after a group of suspects shot at two LAPD officers.
The officers, who were dressed in plain clothes, were fired upon while they were sitting in their vehicle just before 6 p.m. Sunday near 65th Street and Broadway, authorities said.
They returned fire, but it was unclear if any suspect was injured.
The officers suffered minor injuries and were expected to survive.
"That officer had fragments removed from his arm. He had his wound cleaned and was released," Det. Meghan Aguilar said. "The other officer, he suffered a minor injury. We are still trying to determine the extent of that — it did not need any other attention after being treated at the scene."
A SWAT team, armored vehicles, K-9 units and airships searched the area for hours overnight.
Three possible suspects were detained and being questioned. Search warrants were being served at residences linked to them. No arrests have been made.
Sunday's shooting was near where Ezell Ford, an unarmed mentally ill man, was fatally shot by police officers in Aug. 2014 after officers say he attempted to pull a gun out of one of their holsters.
The injured officers believed they were specifically targeted even though they were in an unmarked vehicle.
Civil rights leaders who took part in protests following Ford's death gathered in the same community Monday.
"We're here to call for an end to violence against police officers and the community," Najee Ali said. "We are calling for a ceasefire to violence, period, because we have seen an uptick of violence in recent weeks."
A motive for the shooting was under investigation.
