LA School Police Officer Hurt In Shooting; Witness Says Suspects Were Fighting Over Lawn Mower

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — One person was injured and taken into custody after an officer-involved shooting involving a school police officer in South Los Angeles.

The shooting happened at just about 11:30 a.m. at 86th Street and Broadway when two Los Angeles Unified police officers observed the drivers of two trucks in an apparent dispute.

At some point, one of the trucks reversed and hit one of the officers, which is when the officer-involved shooting occurred.

One person - a suspect - was struck and taken to a hospital with minor injuries. His passenger was unharmed but taken into custody.

The officer was also hospitalized with minor injuries.

The shooting left bullet holes in the windshield and window of a white pickup truck that appeared to be carrying gardening equipment.

A witness who did not want to be identified told CBSLA's Jake Reiner the shooting began as an argument over a lawn mower.

"They was just basically arguing over here on 86th over a lawn mower," he said. "We seen them get out the car like they was going to fight at first and I was going to record it and I end up seeing a guy pull a gun out so we went back in the gym.

"It's pretty crazy because it's over a lawn mower, I didn't think it would be that serious," he added.

No schools were involved in the shooting.
