Saudi Diplomat In LA Seeks Political Asylum
LOS ANGELES (AP) — A Saudi diplomat in Los Angeles is seeking political asylum, saying his life is in danger because he's a homosexual and friends with a Jewish woman.
Saudi consulate official Ali Ahmad Asseri has been ordered back to Saudi Arabia, where homosexuality is illegal.
The Los Angeles Times received an e-mail from Asseri saying Saudi officials had refused to renew his passport, revoked his health benefits and effectively terminated his position as first secretary at the consulate in Los Angeles. NBC News first reported the asylum request on Saturday.
He says the action was taken because he is gay, adding his friendship with a Jewish woman could also make him a target. Asseri says in the e-mail that he will be killed if forced to return to Saudi Arabia.
Asseri attorney Ally Bolour says his client was questioned Aug. 30 by a Department of Homeland Security official in Los Angeles. He declined further comment until the case has been decided.
