Santa Ana School Police Shoot Suspected Car Thief

SANTA ANA (CBS) — A Santa Ana Unified School District police officer shot and wounded a suspected car thief during a traffic stop Tuesday.

Two school police officers stopped a car reportedly stolen in Fountain Valley at Fifth and Fairview streets, in front of Community Day High School, after 10 a.m. The shooting happened during the investigation, Santa Ana police spokesman Corporal Anthony Bertagna said.

Despite being shot, the suspect got back into the car and drove to the 700 block of south Shawnee Drive, where he knocked on doors, saying he had just been shot by police, Bertagna said.

"We got down there and took him into custody," Bertagna said, adding the suspect was taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for wounds that were not believed to be life-threatening.
