Santa Ana Declares Itself A Sanctuary City Ahead Of Trump Presidency

SANTA ANA (CBSLA.com/AP) — The City Council has declared Santa Ana a sanctuary for immigrants regardless of their status in the country in response to Donald Trump's election as president.

The council met Tuesday night and unanimously adopted a resolution stating the city won't use its resources to enforce immigration laws.

The move comes after Trump campaigned on promises to build a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border and calls for tougher immigration enforcement.

City Manager David Cavazos says the resolution aims to ensure residents they will be treated with respect and won't affect plans already underway to phase out a contract to house immigration detainees at a city jail.

Nearly half of Santa Ana's 335,000 residents are foreign-born.

The city becomes the first in O.C. and  joins more than a dozen other cities in Los Angeles County that are considered "sanctuary cities", including Los Angeles, Long Beach, and Norwalk.
