Christopher Sullivan, 22, is in "extremely" critical condition, and possibly paralyzed, according to his family in a report in the San Bernardino Sun.
Sullivan was shot Friday evening.
His aunt, Theresa Marquez, told the newspaper, "He served a tour, and to come home to this, it's so unfair."
Sullivan, currently stationed in Kentucky, is a 2008 graduate of San Bernardino High School. There he played football and was on the wrestling team.
His friends were throwing him a welcome home party at a house in the 2800 block of Garner Avenue.
An unknown man got into a fight with Sullivan's brother (allegedly over football) and when he intervened the man pulled out a gun and shot Sullivan twice in the back.
Sullivan suffered a broken collar bone and some brain damage in the suicide bombing. His family told the Sun he was awarded with a Purple Heart for his war wounds
