San Bernardino Mother Arrested After Girl, 3, Points Deputy's Stolen Gun At Detectives

SAN BERNARDINO (CBSLA.com) — A woman faces charges of child endangerment Wednesday after police say her 3-year-old daughter walked out of a bedroom and pointed a black semi-automatic pistol with a tactical light at detectives who were tracking down a deputy's stolen weapons.

Kimberly Torres, 20, was being questioned at her home in the 2600 block of West Rialto Avenue Tuesday when the toddler walked out of a bedroom holding the loaded gun, according to San Bernardino police officials. The girl was immediately disarmed, and a check of the serial number revealed it was the stolen gun the detectives had been looking for, police said.

The detectives were investigating a May 7 car burglary at West Valley Street and North Stoddard Avenue. The car belonged to an off-duty Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy, and two handguns and other police-related property had been stolen.

During a traffic stop later that day, a San Bernardino County Sheriff's deputy found one of the stolen handguns during a search of the vehicle. The driver, Ramon Quintero, 25, of San Bernardino was arrested, and detectives went on to question Torres, who was the registered owner of the vehicle Quintero had been driving.

After serving a search warrant on Torres' home, the majority of the deputy's property was found, along with another stolen firearm, police said.

The girl was removed from the home by Child and Family Services, and Torres was arrested on suspicion of child endangerment likely to produce bodily injury and possession of stolen property.

She was freed on bail Wednesday, according to San Bernardino County Sheriff's jail records.
