Sacramento Kings Hire NBA's 2nd Female Assistant Coach
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — The Sacramento Kings will reportedly hire Nancy Lieberman as an assistant coach, making her the second female to coach in the NBA.
Last season, the San Antonio Spurs hired Becky Hammon as their shooters coach, making history as she became the first woman to coach at the NBA level. Hammon went on to coach the Spurs Summer League team this summer as well.
Lieberman was unofficially working for the Kings Summer League Team, but the team expects to make her hiring official next week.
"She was terrific. She brings a different dimension. I think it is a nice opportunity for her, " said Vlade Divac, the Kings' president of basketball operations.
Lieberman is no stranger to coaching men, as she served as the Texas Legends head coach from 2009 to 2011. The Legends are an affiliate of the Dallas Mavericks and are a member of the NBA's D-League.
Lieberman also coached in the WNBA for the Detroit Shock. Prior to her coaching days, she had a solid playing career at Old Dominion. She briefly played in the WNBA during its inaugural season in 1997.
She was also inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1996 and is also a member of the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame.
"Lady Magic" will assist head coach George Karl in his first year with the Sacramento Kings.
