Rosca De Reyes Bread Sickens More Than 30 In Orange County
SANTA ANA (CBSLA.com) — More than 30 people have reported dizziness, palpitations and numbness after eating Rosca de Reyes bread distributed by a Santa Ana bakery.
Officials from the OC Health Care Agency say they are investigating the illnesses, which involved more than 30 people from multiple unrelated groups. Cholula's Bakery, which distributed the bread, has been closed pending the outcome of the investigation.
Rosca de Reyes bread, translated as kings' ring, is a Spanish and Latin American king's cake pastry traditionally eaten Jan. 6 during the Kings' Day celebration commemorating the arrival of the three wise men. A figurine of the Christ child is traditionally hidden in the bread to be taken to the nearest church on Candlemas Day by whomever finds it.
The bread was distributed Jan. 5 and 6 to several stores in Orange County and Long Beach. Health officials have advised retailers to remove any unsold products from shelves and consumers who purchased the bread are advised to discard any uneaten product.
Anyone who consumed the bread and experiences symptoms similar to those reported should contact a doctor.
