Rory McIlroy Wins PGA Championship
LOUISVILLE, KY (CBSLA.com/AP) — Rory McIlroy has won the PGA Championship at Valhalla for his second straight major and fourth overall.
The Northern Irish golfer is the third youngest to win his fourth major, behind Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus.
"I didn't think in my wildest dreams I'd have a summer like this," said McIlroy, only the seventh player to win the last two majors of the year. "I played the best golf of my life. I really gutted it out today."
McIlroy hit a 9-iron from a fairway bunker on the 17th hole to 10 feet and made the birdie putt to take a two-shot lead to the par-5 18th. Because of a two-hour rain delay, darkness was falling quickly and it wasn't certain McIlroy would be able to finish.
Fighting that darkness, McIlroy, along with Phil Mickelson, Rickie Fowler and Henrik Stenson, found themselves in a shootout for the lead.
McIlroy, who rallied from being down by three shots, overtook the lead with the help of an Eagle on the 10th hole, and birdies on the 13th and 17th holes.
Mickelson, who bogied on the 16th hole, was reportedly unhappy about playing in the dark conditions of Valhalla.
McIlroy's 1-shot win finally came on a two-putt from a bunker 35 feet from the hole.
