Corona Man Arrested After Shooting At Police During Pursuit
RIVERSIDE (CBSLA.com) — A 38-year-old man who fired dozens of rounds at officers as he led them on a chase through Riverside has been arrested, police said Wednesday.
Leslie D. Berry Jr., of Corona, was booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center for attempted murder of three police officers, evading arrest and weapons charges, according to police.
The pursuit began just before 6 p.m. Tuesday when a Corona police sergeant attempted to stop a full-size white van near Buchanan and Sampson avenues.
According to police, the van matched the description of a vehicle that was involved in a drive-by shooting, which took place on Sept. 17 in Corona.
During the stop, Berry fled in the van to Magnolia Avenue and Pierce Street in Riverside where he fired multiple rounds at the sergeant.
Detectives who were driving through the area witnessed the shooting and returned fire at Berry.
He then led authorities to the eastbound 91 Freeway, firing more shots in their direction.
Berry eventually exited the freeway at Tyler Street, and traveled to a shopping center where he exited the van and again fired multiple rounds at authorities.
When detectives returned fire, Berry got back into the van and fled to Van Buren Boulevard where he managed to jump out of the van before it collided with an oncoming vehicle.
Berry then fled on foot with a firearm and attempted to hide from authorities.
About 20 minutes later, he emerged and surrendered without incident.
Detectives located a modified assault rifle at the scene.
No injuries were reported.
