Pursuit Ends In Riverside Shootout, 91 Freeway Crash

RIVERSIDE (CBSLA.com) — Authorities say a 35-year-old man was taken into custody after a police chase and wild shootout in Riverside.

Investigators said the incident began when police tried to pull over a suspected stolen vehicle at Crowell and Magnolia avenues just before midnight.

After a short chase, the vehicle stopped at Adams Street and Diana Avenue.

As officers approached, investigators say the driver put the car in reverse, prompting police to open fire.

Police said one of the officers was struck by the patrol car's door when the suspect vehicle accelerated backwards. That officer was taken to an area hospital and has since been released.

Authorities also said two of the suspect vehicle's passengers were struck by gunfire.

They were taken to an area hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

After the shooting, the suspect vehicle took off. The car traveled a short distance before plunging down an embankment and onto the westbound lanes of the 91 Freeway.

The driver of the vehicle was identified by police as Remijio Madriles Jr. of Buena Park.

Madriles was expected to be booked into Riverside County Jail on various charges, including attempted murder of a police officer and possession of a stolen vehicle, according to authorities.

Police said the two passengers inside the suspect vehicle, described as a 25-year-old man and 17-year-old boy, were not arrested.
