Family, Friends Mourn Teen Fatally Struck By Metrolink Train
RIVERSIDE (CBSLA.com) — Family and friends are grieving the loss of a teen boy who was fatally struck by a Metrolink train.
At around 6 p.m. Thursday, Serafin "Angel" Gonzalez was waiting to cross the dual tracks on Madison Street near Indiana. After a freight train passed he rode his bike across the tracks and was hit by a Metrolink train coming from the opposite direction.
The teen's classmates, friends and family visited the site Friday, weeping as they placed candles and messages at a makeshift memorial.
"It's been really sad around campus, teachers crying and, just, the feeling around campus," said Arlington High student Sarah Bradley.
According to Metrolink, the conductor did see the teenager on the tracks and blew the horn several times. Officials say it takes up to a quarter mile or more to stop the train so there wasn't enough time.
Reports indicate 77 passengers were on board the train at the time of the collision.
