RFK's Killer, Sirhan Sirhan, Moved To San Diego Prison On Anniversary Of JFK's Assassination
SAN DIEGO (CBSLA.com) — CBS' San Diego affiliate KFMB is reporting that Sirhan Sirhan, Robert Kennedy's killer, was moved Friday from Corcoran State Prison to a prison in San Diego.
Friday, of course, is the 50th anniversary of the assassination of RFK's brother, John F. Kennedy, the 35th president.
Sirhan had been housed at Corcoran, a prison in the Central Valley. Sirhan was moved to the Richard J. Donovan Correction Facility in San Diego, described as a level 3 prison. Level 4 facilities house the state's most dangerous felons.
Officials say prisoners are moved all the time. But eyebrows were raised because of the timing of this particular move.
Authorities do not comment about why prisoners are moved. But Luis Patino, a spokesman for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, said, "As a routine matter of housing allotment, Sirhan Sirhan was moved from Corcoran State Prison to R.J. Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego County today. The date of the move is simply an unfortunate coincidence. Any number of inmates are moved from institution to institution on any given day as necessary."
Sirhan was sentenced to death a year after the June 1968 assassination of Robert Kennedy. The sentence was commuted to life in 1972.
