Retired UCLA Professor Sentenced In Fraud Case

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A retired UCLA physics professor has been sentenced to six months home detention and ordered to pay nearly $1.7 million in restitution for submitting phony invoices while working under a federal contract.

Alfred Wong was also sentenced Thursday in Los Angeles to five days behind bars. The 76-year-old pleaded guilty earlier this year to making a false claim to the government.

Prosecutors say he turned over fictitious invoices saying he'd manufactured and sold components, and submitted equipment and labor costs for work unrelated to the government.

A longtime UCLA physics professor, Wong started a pair of companies about 10 years ago to do contract research for the government.
