Restaurant Owned By Costa Mesa Mayor Targeted In Brick Attack
COSTA MESA (CBS) — Skosk Monahan's restaurant in Costa Mesa now has brick on the menu...after someone tossed one through a window, according to police.
The restaurant, a steak house owned by Costa Mesa mayor Gary Monahan, was a deliberate target, say authorities.
The mayor is embroiled currently in a dispute with city workers.
The incident occurred around 3:30 a.m. at Skosh Monahan's, 2000 Newport Blvd., said Sgt Patrick Wessel of the Costa Mesa Police Department.
"An unknown person or persons through a brick through the front door window of the establishment," Wessel said. "The door was also damaged. Some sort of substance, po≤sibly glue, was put in the door lock."
Wessel said an employee was inside during the time of the attack, but no one was injured.
"There was a note taped to the brick expressing dissatisfaction with the mayor," Wessel said.
No suspects were identified and no arrests were made, he said.
Monahan is one one of the majority votes on the Costa Mesa city council that voted to lay off half of the city's work force, in a move to stem red ink he said was caused by overgenerous benefits. Union officials said the mass firings will not save the city any money and were politically motivated.
One city employee, a mechanic, threw himself to his death from Costa Mesa City Hall just after the layoffs were announced.
